Last minute rush for BVN registration in Ogun (Photo)
Residents in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital yesterday stormed banks across the city for the last minute rush to register for their bank verification number (BVN).
The apex bank, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has ordered that operators of bank accounts in the country to visit their respective banks for their verification number.
The exercise is to enable banks document the biometrics of their customers.
Findings round the banks within Abeokuta metropolis yesterday revealed that banking halls of most banks were filled to the brim as customers besiege their banks for the exercise.
While expressing regret for not to have done the registration since it commenced last year, customers appeal to CBN to shift the deadline so as to accommodate everyone.
Investigation revealed that if the exercise ended today, almost 14.6 million Nigerians will have been deprived the opportunity to register for the verification number and having their account tampered with.
Some bank officials also support the people to solicit for extension of the day to allow more people to do the registration.
The process had been on since February, 2014 and will now come to an end today June 30,2015 as stipulated by the CBN.
