BringBackOurGirls campaign begins countdown to FG’s rescue mission
The group advocating for the rescue of the abducted Chibok School girls,#BringBackOurGirls Campaign, on Saturday, in Abuja, began a count down to the Federal Government’s promise of using multi-national operation to rescue the abducted girls.
Addressing the group during the count down launch of the multi-national-backed rescue operation at the Unity Fountain in Abuja, a former Minister of Education and co-convener of #BringBackOurGirls advocacy group, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, said “We are very interested in the operation because we are hopeful that our Chibok girls will be rescued during this period as being promised everyone of us.”
While supporting the multi-national massive operation against the terrorists aimed at restoring peace and security to the North-East and in the process rout the terrorists and rescue our Chibok girls, she declared that “the time line that was given for this is six weeks and so on this day which is the day that the operation is adjudged to be taking off, we, as a movement, that has been advocating for these girls are happy to begin a count down.
“A count down that will enable us on a daily basis to monitor the progress that is made over the period of the six weeks that the Federal Government has conveyed its requires in other to achieve success that will include the rescue of our girls. And so to that effect, we are launching our countdown to six weeks, what it means is that everyday for the next six weeks our movement will gather every information that is provided on the multi national operation that has been launched,”, she stated.
To this end, she hinted that, “On weekly basis we will address the public, giving them a summary of the information that we have gathered from the activities of the rescue operation, and we would give an assessment of what we think in the rescue of our Chibok girls, we are very hopeful that the six weeks within which time line we expect considerable progress by our Federal government in the rescue of our Chibok girls.
“Today is 43 days to the six weeks we have been given for the rescue operation of the girls, so we are counting down while counting up the number of days that our girls have been in captivity, our hope is that somewhere between day one and day 43 of this intensed activities against the salvages that are holding our girls hostage there will be a convergence of the count up of the number of days our girls have been in captivity and the count down of the operation to rescue them and bring back to the North East zone of our country”.
On why there is need to monitor the multi-national military operation in the North East, she maintained that, “Because whatever is not monitored should not be expected, we are providing a monitoring of what is been done in other to give the entire society well informed information on the operation”.
It will be recalled that 276 Chibok girls were kidnapped by the Boko Haram group from their school dormitory and 57 of the girls escaped, while 219 girls were reportedly said to be missing.
The #BringBackOurGirls movement has over the past months sustained its advocacy including daily sit-outs in Abuja and regular sit-outs in Lagos and Ibadan as well as several other sit-outs, marches and protests that have held across the world.
