A former NBA star has been found dead in his pool after tripping, hitting his head and falling in.

Jackson Vroman, 34, was at his home in Los Angeles County, California, on Monday when he drowned, the coroner's office confirmed. 

CBN extends BVN registration deadline to October 31

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Tuesday extended the deadline for the Bank Verification Number registration by four months  from June 30 to October 31, 2015.

The apex bank disclosed this in a circular issued to all Deposit Money Banks operating in the country.

 

The circular dated Tuesday, June 30 with reference number BPS/DIR/GEN/CIR/02/008 was signed by the Director, Banking and Payment Systems Department, CBN, Mr Dipo Fatokun.

The bank in the circular said the extension became imperative in order to give customers of DMBs more time to participate in the enrollment exercise.

 

Cop arrested for killing two women at funeral

 

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a police corporal for shooting two women to death during a funeral at Ivhiokhile quarters, Fugar, in the Etsako Central Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that one of the women, Sandra Imhaku, was hit by a bullet from the yet-to-be-identified police officer’s gun last Saturday.

The gun went off while the cop was trying usher his principal, said to be a traditional ruler, into a vehicle.

Aregbesola pays workers December salary

 

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Osun State, Mr. Jacob Adekomi,  said on Tuesday, that Governor Rauf Aregbesola has approved the payment of December, 2014 salary for workers in the state.

 

Adekomi, who said this at a press conference he addressed after a meeting with the government delegation led by Chief of Staff, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, added that the governor also approved the payment of the 30 per cent balance of November salaries of some workers who were yet to be paid in full. The NLC boss, however, said workers would not suspend their strike despite the payment of their one month salary out of seven months.

Mozambique ends ban on homosexuality & abortion

MOZAMBIQUE decriminalised homosexuality on Monday when a new penal code came into force that swept away old Portuguese colonial laws, in a victory for campaigners for gay rights in Africa.

The old code, dating back to 1886, targeted anyone “who habitually engages in vices against nature”—but no known prosecutions took place after Mozambique became independent in 1975.

Breaking the law was theoretically punishable by up to three years of hard labour.

Jega bows out of INEC, hands over to Wali

Prof. Attahiru Jega on Tuesday bowed out of office as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He handed over to Mohammed Wali, a national commissioner of the INEC from Sokoto State, whose five-year tenure will also expire on August 11, 2015.

Jega was appointed chairman of the commission by former President Goodluck Jonathan on June 30, 2010.

He conducted two elections – 2011 and 2015.

The council says: “We looked at the numbers for the Excess Crude Account. The last time the former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, reported to the council, and it is in the minutes, she reported by November 2014 that we had $4.1 bn.”
